Lisbon Design Week’s standout highlights revealed

Lisbon Design Week returned this spring for its fourth edition, filling 80 venues across 11 neighborhoods with over 150 designers and artists in five days. The event coincided with ARCO art fair and Lisbon By Design, transforming the city into a showcase of contemporary craft, sustainable materials, and folkloric influences rendered mostly in neutral tones.

Below are notable projects from the 2026 program.

Copper Takes Center Stage in MINE(ral)

Dutch designer Nick Valentijn worked with architect João Gameiro of Studio Gameiro and Antwerp’s ST VINCENTS gallery to create MINE(ral), a collection of patinated copper furniture. The pieces included an anthropomorphic floor lamp, an oversized armchair, a low table, and a wall sconce. Warm, oxidized finishes softened the metal’s industrial appearance.

Tradition Meets Modernity in Coro Lighting

Moldó Studios’ Sotaque exhibition featured Coro, a floor lamp by Macheia and OTZI studio. The design drew inspiration from Portuguese Adule frame drums, combining stretched calfskin vellum shades with smoked oak frames. It bridged centuries-old musical traditions with modern lighting solutions.

USM’s Modular System Gets a Textile Upgrade

Swiss manufacturer USM introduced NKYINKYIM, an upholstery collaboration with Portuguese textile studio Fabricaal. Designed by Armando Cabral, the collection took its name from an Akan symbol representing transformation. Heirloom weaving patterns added texture and cultural depth to USM’s modular frames.

Cork’s Versatility on Full Display

Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, who established his studio in Portugal in 2017, showcased the Burnt Cork chair. The design used Portugal’s most iconic material, shaping it into a curvaceous seat that emphasized cork’s warmth and adaptability.

Textile Art as Political Commentary

Laëtitia Rouget and creative director Colombine Jubert’s Pangea collaboration presented Dance With Chaos at Studio Mirante. The exhibition used silk painting and hand embroidery to explore contemporary politics, turning fabric into a medium for commentary.

French Designer Expands His Lisbon Presence

Duchaufour-Lawrance appeared in multiple venues. At real estate boutique Fantastic Frank, he displayed limited-edition ceramics and furniture from his Jupiter collection. Meanwhile, at Lisbon By Design, his Espirito armchair—upholstered in Pierre Frey’s velvet mohair and featuring a ceramic base—drew attention for its sculptural form.

The event demonstrated the city’s design scene is both diverse and ambitious.

Local materials and high craftsmanship defined the week.

Tradition and innovation coexisted without compromising functionality or visual appeal.
